The story begins with the purchase of a new home by the Presley family. Kevin’s dad, Frank (Anthony Mackie), encourages him to upload a video of Ernest to YouTube in the hopes of gaining fame and reviving the ghost’s memory.
At Kevin’s new school, he meets Joy, the girl who lives next door (Isabella Russo), and the two decide to investigate the ghost together. As they dig more into the mystery, they uncover a photo of the ghost with the former homeowner, Ernest S. (Tom Bower). This sets off a chain of memories that reveal how the ghost is connected to the girl’s daughter.
Anthony Mackie’s film takes an unexpected turn when a horror writer who used to work for the CIA and catch ghosts, Doctor Leslie Monroe (Tig Notaro), sets out to capture Ernest. However, Kevin, Joy, and Ernest have already left for Oklahoma in search of Ernest S. The ghost’s name, he reveals, is Randy.
Earnest S. relates a terrifying tale concerning Randy’s wife’s death, his subsequent absence, and the impact on their daughter June. Randy will be captured once the CIA arrives in Oklahoma. As the plot develops, Randy is haunted by a flashback of the night he committed himself. Randy is released after Doctor Monroe learns of the situation.
