Mackie’s Netflix Horror Flick Surprise Hit Steals the Show

The ghostly horror comedy We Have a Ghost can now be seen streaming on Netflix. The film is based on the short tale Ernest by Geoff Manaugh, published in 2017. It’s under Christopher Landon’s supervision. Starring David Harbour, Anthony Mackie, Tig Notaro, and Jennifer Coolidge, this offbeat film boasts a fantastic ensemble cast. Audiences will be taken on a thrilling journey through the afterlife.

The horror comedy We Have a Ghost features an all-star cast. It’s currently streaming on Netflix.

The story begins with the purchase of a new home by the Presley family. Kevin (Jahi Winston), the group’s youngest member, soon discovers an idiot ghost in the attic wearing a shirt with Ernest’s name. Kevin’s dad, Frank (Anthony Mackie), encourages him to upload a video of Ernest to YouTube in the hopes of gaining fame and reviving the ghost’s memory.

At Kevin’s new school, he meets Joy, the girl who lives next door (Isabella Russo), and the two decide to investigate the ghost together. As they dig more into the mystery, they uncover a photo of the ghost with the former homeowner, Ernest S. (Tom Bower). This sets off a chain of memories that reveal how the ghost is connected to the girl’s daughter.

Anthony Mackie’s film takes an unexpected turn when a horror writer who used to work for the CIA and catch ghosts, Doctor Leslie Monroe (Tig Notaro), sets out to capture Ernest. However, Kevin, Joy, and Ernest have already left for Oklahoma in search of Ernest S. The ghost’s name, he reveals, is Randy.

Earnest S. relates a terrifying tale concerning Randy’s wife’s death, his subsequent absence, and the impact on their daughter June. Randy will be captured once the CIA arrives in Oklahoma. As the plot develops, Randy is haunted by a flashback of the night he committed himself. Randy is released after Doctor Monroe learns of the situation.

Despite its modest budget, almost 3 billion minutes of We Have a Ghost have been viewed on Netflix, making it a huge success for stars Anthony Mackie and David Harbour.

Ernest S. visits the Presley residence on the off chance that Kevin will exact revenge for Randy’s death. A surprising reality is revealed when Ernest S. reveals a dark secret. Frank (Anthony Mackie) intervenes dramatically during a fight between Kevin and Ernest S. in the attic as the film’s last scene.

After a tearful parting with Kevin, Randy is reunited with his daughter. Frank (Anthony Mackie) decides to relocate his family after Randy’s death. An unexplainable light in the attic suggests the presence of a supernatural presence as Kevin departs the house for the last time.

The production of We Have a Ghost wasn’t without its share of setbacks, such as when filming had to be temporarily halted because of Hurricane Ida. David Harbour’s portrayal of the silent ghost Ernest was a highlight. Harbour’s ability to convey a wide range of emotions with his nonverbal performance attracted the film’s director, Christopher Landon.

Not everyone appreciated We Have a Ghost, despite the fact that it offered a fresh and ultimately comforting spin on the classic ghost narrative. The movie was met with mixed reviews from critics, as seen by its 42% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and its Metascore of 53. Some viewers were put off by the juxtaposition of scary and funny moments, while others like the film’s throwback aesthetic.

The February 24 release of We Have a Ghost, starring Anthony Mackie, brought in roughly 19.1 million CVEs over the weekend. Online ticket sales were respectable for a B movie. In its first week, it outperformed A Madea Homecoming and The Curse of Bridge Hollow, according to What’s On Netflix.

What’s Next for Anthony Mackie?

Anthony Mackie can’t wait for the release of Captain America: Brave New World on July 26, 2024. The film’s director, Julius Onah, is in charge of production. He co-wrote the story with Dalan Musson and Malcolm Spellman. Harrison Ford, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, and Liv Tyler all have roles in the film.
