The popularity of One Piece has spread across nearly every medium save one: live action. The story, written by Eiichiro Oda, first appeared in 1997 and has since become an unstoppable force in Japan. It became the top-selling manga ever and is widely considered to be one of the best series to come out of the Pacific island where the manga originated.
Netflix has announced a live-action version of the series, more than 26 years after the book first appeared in print. It defied expectations and lived up to its billing, proving that the “live-action curse” can be broken. Oda oversaw the production of the adaptation, which premiered to the delight of both longtime readers and those who were curious about the epic drama for the first time.
When the series premiered, there were certain to be a lot of unanswered questions among the audience. So, what does the King of the Pirates’ actual name look like?
In One Piece, what does Roger go by?
The late King of the Pirates is introduced to viewers in the pilot episode of the live-action series. His death signified the beginning of a new age of piracy and revolution for nearly twenty years after it occurred. He purposefully abandoned his prize, the One Piece, for the most determined of treasure hunters. Even though his life was cut tragically short, any fan of One Piece can attest to Roger’s legendary status. However, despite his fame, there is a specific reason why many of his supporters continue to spell his name incorrectly.

Gold Roger is actually short for Gol D. Roger, despite popular belief to the contrary. Oda probably meant for him to have ‘Gold’ in his name, but he has a ‘D’ where the ‘O’ would be if he were a pirate. The main character, Monkey D. Luffy, is one of several in the One Piece universe with this last name.
A prophecy about the so-called ‘will of D.’ applies to all people with the same title, although that doesn’t necessarily imply any direct kinship between these characters. We still don’t know much about its nature, therefore I won’t give away any secrets about what we do know. To this point, all that can be said for sure is that the ‘D’ in the middle is indeed part of Roger’s correct spelling.
Now streaming on Netflix is the live-action adaption of One Piece.
